Blithe Spirit – Meet the cast – Ruth Condomine ( Bernie Lomas)

This is my fifth play with West Meon Theatre, and I’m so pleased to be taking on the role of Ruth Condomine, the current wife of Charles Condomine. Ruth is widely regarded as a challenging and rewarding role, as she requires careful timing and imagination because she cannot see or hear the ghost (Elvira). She also has a lot going on—she begins the play calm and composed but quickly becomes frustrated when her husband starts talking to someone who “isn’t there”, leaving her trying to keep everything together as chaos takes over, so her emotional arc is full of shifts in control. Although I’ve had to “shake off” some of her tension after rehearsals, I’m enjoying exploring her tightly held reserve within this comedy, as well as the witty writing that gives her such sharpness and personality. As a character, she is quite different to roles I have played previously, so she has been a wonderful opportunity to stretch my acting muscles. It is also a treat to tread the boards with the actors of West Meon Theatre again, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be part of bringing this classic piece to the stage.
